The colour reactions of zirconium and hafnium with oxidized salicyl florone, which is made of salicyl florone and hydrogen peroxide, have been investigated in this paper. It is shown that zirconium and hafnium can form red-purple complexes with oxidized salicyl florone in the presence of cetyltrimethyl ammonium bromide and 0.25-0.42VHCl, respectively. And the complexes show maximum absorption at 586nm (ε_(z(f))=1.06×10~(f)) and at 578nm (ε_((z)f)=1.05×10~5) with the difference of 8nm. It presents a possibility of simultaneous determination of zirconium and hafnium with K factor method in dual-wavelength spectrophotometry. This method provides a simple and accurate procedure, and allows the zirconium-hafnium proportion from 1:18 to 11:1.
