In this article, the formation of the science of cultural studies as an independent scientific field, the stages of its historical development, and its educational importance in the life of the society are thoroughly analyzed. It reveals the differences between the place of cultural studies in the Western education system and its narrow interpretation (only as cultural history) in the former Soviet Union. The article focuses on the conceptual views of scientists such as Leslie White, I. Gerder, I. Kant based on a systematic approach to the phenomenon of culture. The central part of the article describes in detail the social and educational functions of cultural studies: adaptation (adaptation), cognitive (knowledge), information (storage and transmission), communicative (dialogue), axiological (value), normative (regulation) and socialization tasks. It also emphasizes the role of cultural studies in the realization of national identity and ensuring intergenerational cultural succession in the context of globalization. It is justified that culture is not only “second nature”, but also an important tool that shapes human behavior, alleviates conflicts in society, and leads to spiritual maturity.
