Environmental, Social, and Governance (ESG) reporting has emerged as a critical framework for evaluating corporate sustainability and responsibility in contemporary business environments. This research examines the relationship between ESG disclosure practices and financial performance across major Indian industries, addressing the fundamental question of whether sustainability commitments translate into economic value. As Indian corporations face increasing pressure from investors, regulators, and stakeholders to adopt ESG frameworks, understanding the financial implications becomes crucial for strategic decision-making. Through comprehensive analysis of ESG reporting patterns and financial metrics across manufacturing, information technology, banking, pharmaceutical, and energy sectors, this study explores how sustainability performance correlates with profitability, market valuation, and operational efficiency. Our findings reveal significant sectoral variations in ESG-financial performance relationships, with IT and pharmaceutical companies demonstrating stronger positive correlations compared to traditional manufacturing and energy sectors. The research identifies key mechanisms through which ESG practices influence financial outcomes including enhanced reputation, improved operational efficiency, reduced regulatory risks, and better access to capital. However, we also find that short-term costs associated with ESG implementation can temporarily depress financial metrics before longer-term benefits materialize. This study contributes to the growing body of evidence on sustainable business practices in emerging markets and provides practical insights for corporate leaders, investors, and policymakers navigating India's evolving sustainability landscape.
