Abstract

Modern software development imposes substantial cognitive burden on developers who must navigate complex toolchains, infrastructure configurations, deployment pipelines, and operational requirements beyond core application logic. Internal Developer Platforms (IDPs) emerged as platform engineering approach to abstract infrastructure complexity and reduce cognitive load, yet their effectiveness specifically for Java development contexts remains insufficiently understood. This research conducts comprehensive qualitative investigation of IDP implementation impacts on cognitive load for Java developers across eight organizations spanning fintech, e-commerce, and enterprise software sectors. Through semi-structured interviews with 47 Java developers and platform engineers, observation of development workflows, and analysis of productivity metrics before and after IDP adoption, we identify specific cognitive load reduction mechanisms and developer experience improvements. Our findings reveal that well-designed IDPs reduce time spent on infrastructure-related tasks by 68%, decrease context switching between tools by 54%, and improve developer satisfaction scores by 43 points on 100-point scales. However, benefits vary substantially based on IDP design quality, with poorly implemented platforms paradoxically increasing cognitive load through additional abstraction layers and limited customization. The research identifies critical IDP design principles including progressive disclosure enabling developers to access complexity when needed, golden paths providing opinionated but escapable defaults, and self-service capabilities minimizing dependencies on platform teams. These findings contribute both theoretical understanding of cognitive load in modern development contexts and practical guidance for platform engineering teams designing IDPs for Java ecosystems.
