Abstract

Electric Vehicle, as a sustainable paradigm of transportation, could be powered by renewable sources: Photovoltaic (PV) energy source can be implemented in Electric Vehicle (EV) drive applications, which face challenges resulted mainly from the PV output power variation and the power electronic conversion efficiency. In this paper, a PV-powered Brushless DC (BLDC) motor drive system for the application of EVs using a new Improved KY DC-DC converter and ACO-tuned PI (ACO-PI) controller is proposed. The enhanced KY converter can effectively step up the variational PV voltage to the high-gain and low-ripple DC link, and the ACO-PI controller can dynamically control the duty cycle of a KY converter to achieve accurate voltage regulation with quick dynamic response. A battery is connected to the system through a bidirectional buck-boost converter so that the extra solar power can be stored and this power can be used during shortages period of solar power for the constant drive of electric motor. The KS4925 proposed system can efficiently (≈93.53%) accommodate for irradiance and settle time variation (\~0.1 s), which are confirmed successfully through MATLAB/Simulink simulation package. The simulation results indicate that the proposed topology has better overall performance than other typical existing ones, lower switching stress, smaller output voltage ripple, and the speed control ability of the BLDC motor is robust. The proposed PV-fed drive and its control architecture enhances energy utilization, energy stability, and green energy targets for upcoming electric vehicles.
