Abstract

Diagrid structural systems have emerged as innovative solutions combining architectural aesthetics with structural efficiency in modern tall building construction. This research investigates the optimization of diagrid angles across various building geometries under seismic loading conditions through comprehensive dynamic analysis. The study examines diagrid systems with angles ranging from 45° to 75° in rectangular, circular, and L-shaped building configurations using finite element modeling and nonlinear time-history analysis.

The research methodology employs ETABS and SAP2000 software for structural modeling and analysis, utilizing a set of ground motion records representative of high seismic zones. Performance parameters including inter-story drift, base shear, displacement response, and energy dissipation capacity are evaluated for 24 different diagrid configurations. Results demonstrate that optimal diagrid angles vary significantly with building geometry and height, with rectangular buildings performing best at 65-70°, circular configurations at 60-65°, and L-shaped structures requiring variable angles ranging from 55-70° depending on structural height.

The study reveals that properly optimized diagrid angles can reduce peak inter-story drift by up to 35% and increase energy dissipation capacity by 45% compared to non-optimized configurations. These findings provide essential guidance for practicing engineers in selecting appropriate diagrid angles for seismic-resistant design across different building geometries.
