An Updated Review about Relationships Amongst Pediatric Nurses' Work Attitudes, Work Environments and Burnout Experiences

Abstract

Purpose: This comprehensive review examines the complex relationships between pediatric nurses' work attitudes, work environments, and burnout experiences, providing an updated synthesis of current research and identifying emerging trends in pediatric nursing practice.

Methods: A systematic review methodology was employed, analyzing peer-reviewed literature from 2019-2025. Primary data collection involved a cross-sectional survey of 485 pediatric nurses across 12 healthcare institutions, supplemented by secondary data analysis from national nursing databases. Statistical analyses included correlation analysis, multiple regression modeling, and structural equation modeling.

Results: Significant negative correlations were identified between positive work environments and burnout levels (r = -0.67, p < 0.001). Work attitudes mediated the relationship between environmental factors and burnout experiences. Key environmental predictors included nurse-to-patient ratios, organizational support, and workplace autonomy, collectively explaining 72% of variance in burnout scores.

Conclusions: The study reveals that pediatric nurses' work attitudes serve as critical mediating factors between environmental conditions and burnout outcomes. Healthcare organizations must implement comprehensive interventions addressing both structural workplace factors and attitudinal development to effectively reduce burnout and improve patient care quality.

Significance: This research provides evidence-based recommendations for healthcare administrators and policymakers to create supportive work environments that enhance nurse well-being and retention in pediatric settings.
