Abstract

This study explores the achievements and challenges of LGBTQIA+ students within the university setting, highlighting both their resilience and the systemic barriers they face. Utilizing a qualitative, phenomenological approach, data were collected through interviews and focus group discussions with LGBTQIA+ students from various colleges. The findings reveal that these students excel in leadership, academics, arts, and athletics, underscoring their talents and contributions to the university community. However, they also face significant challenges, including bullying, discrimination, and restrictive institutional policies that inhibit self-expression and academic progress. The study further examines the complex interplay between the students' successes and struggles, revealing that while achievements foster confidence and skill development, the negative impact of societal prejudice can impede academic performance and contribute to psychological stress. The findings underscore the urgent need for more inclusive and supportive educational environments. Recommendations include the establishment of LGBTQIA+ support systems, accessible mental health services, and initiatives to foster acceptance and reduce stigma. These efforts aim to ensure that LGBTQIA+ students can thrive both academically and personally within a more inclusive university community.
